Memorial Weekend Activities & Getaways

Five days of work this week and then hellloo long weekend! If you haven’t made plans as yet it’s still not too late to do so. Rounding up Memorial Weekend activities and getaways around the San Francisco bay area.

If you will be in town or a local who is not fancying a getaway then check out some of these great events going around the Bay Area.

Memorial Day: A Day of Honor & Remembrance

One of the largest events on Memorial Day in San Francisco is held in the Presidio. Starting at 10:30am on Memorial Day, military members, family and friends will honor those who died for our country. The event is held in the National Cemetery and will last until around 1:30pm. Everyone is welcome to attend.

San Francisco Giants

Head over to AT&T Park as the San Francisco Giants take on the Atlanta Braves. There are three-game series this weekend on Friday, Saturday, and Sunday.

SF Bay Sunset Cruise

One of the greatest ways to relax this weekend is on a two-hour sunset cruise around the bay. This sunset cruise offers you the chance to unwind as you cruise past famous SF landmarks, such as the Palace of Fine Arts, Alcatraz Island, and Angel Island. You also get the chance to sail under the Golden Gate Bridge not once but twice! Your ticket also includes a light appetizer buffet and drinks are available for purchase at the bar. Cruises are Friday, Saturday, Sunday, and Monday nights at 7pm.

Free Walking Tours

The San Francisco public library has several free walking tours scheduled for Memorial Day Weekend. They range from informative walks around the colorful Mission District to one about the movies Alfred Hitchcock made here. No registration or tickets are required. Simply show up at the designated time for the chance to learn more about this beautiful city by the bay.

Carnaval Celebration & Parade

Spend some time in the Mission District on Memorial Day Weekend for their 36th Annual Carnaval Celebration. This two-day street fair starts on Saturday morning and lasts until Sunday afternoon. It includes live music, food and a large parade on Sunday, May 28, 2017. The festival is free and a fun way to mingle with locals.

While you are in the mission district, don’t forget to check out La Taqueria. This no-frills Mexican Eatery has some of the best burritos I have ever eaten. You can also grab fresh fruit sprinkled with spices at nearly every corner. Don’t miss out!

Hamilton & Other Theater Shows this Weekend

The top theater performance this weekend is Hamilton. This blockbuster musical tells the story of Alexander Hamilton. You will learn about his political wins, sex scandal, and about him being a war hero. I have heard that it’s being told in a way that you’ve never heard before.

Another big show this weekend is Roman Holiday. It’s a love story based on the Academy Award winning film. It’s all weekend long at the Golden Gate Theater.

The Dinner Detective: An Interactive Mystery Dinner Show

Spend Saturday night solving the mystery of whodunit as you enjoy a four-course meal. This fun dinner and detective show is set in the present day and includes murder, mystery and clues throughout your dinner. The evening starts with a reception and then you are seated for dinner. Between courses you will work through the clues to solve the mystery. It starts at 6pm and lasts for about 3 hours. The event is at the San Francisco’s Le Meridian Hotel.

The Big 80’s Party

Kick off the Memorial Day Weekend in San Francisco with The Big 80’s Party at Public Works in San Francisco. Enjoy songs from popular 80’s artists including George Michael, The Beastie Boys, Madonna, Men at Work, U2, Guns N’ Roses, and so many more. The fun starts at 9pm on Friday night!

If you are looking to get away from the hustle and bustle of the city and do a staycation I recommend the following places:

  • Napa and/or Sonoma (There is an event going on this weekend so you will have to call around as most hotels are booked up)
  • Big Sur
  • Mendocino
  • Carmel (Check out the Tickle Me Pink Inn)
  • Santa Barbara
  • Santa Cruz
  • Palm Springs
  • San Diego
